Yesterday I met a friend in Utsunomiya, a city regionally famous for its
gyoza and its jazz. (It's the hometown of
Sadao Watanabe and it was the home base of a division deployed to China during Japan's more warlike days.) It's awfully hard to find much gyoza or jazz in Utsunomiya before the sun goes down, but we did come across a
chindonya troupe that included a
saxophonist who did a great job of imparting a Japanese feel to her playing.
